Having seen the screenshot of your notes you posted yesterday, it's so amazing to see the final product translated into such a detailed essay! As someone who has very limited art education, this was a fantastic read.

Your essay taught me so much about Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington. I really like surrealist art, and I'm disappointed that I hadn't heard of these two artists before now. Your essay made me love this movement even more! Thank you for your incredible writing and for sharing your research about these artists and their work. This was an incredible essay! Keep doing what you're doing, your writing is beautiful, and needs to be heard :)

I am both glad that you enjoyed my work and were able to discover these two incredible artists! Thank you for reading and for the lovely comment, Peyton. I very much will be writing more essays like this in future, both as a learning exercise for myself and also to share my love of art. 🤍

This was a really enjoyable read! Been a fan of Remedios Varo for some time. Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark will have a retrospective exhibition of her work, which is one of the art happenings I am anticipating the most this year.

I am desperately wanting to see an exhibition, that sounds so exciting! Thank you so much for reading!

This was completely wonderful and I’m so happy it popped into my feed! Magic. I just bought The Stone Door and I am so excited to read it. The Hearing Trumpet is on my reread list for this summer as well. I’m looking forward to bingeing your archive now. Cheers! ✨

Thank you so much for reading & taking the time to comment, Rachel! It always feels like magic when the algorithm connects us to each other and to brilliant artists like Varo and Carrington. This is my first art analysis since I graduated, so I feel really emboldened knowing you enjoyed it and can’t wait to write more. Happy reading!! I’m currently reading The Stone Door and Down Below, and have Varo’s writing on order, so even after this essay, these two are taking up all of my brain space ♾️

What a blast to be introduced to two fascinating women at once entangled in such extraordinary analysis!

Thanks for reading, Charlotte! I’m excited to continue writing more essays about them!

"I finish this essay with more questions than answers, and perhaps that is the entire point of Femme Surrealism." I absolutely love this.

And speaking of eggs, do you know Hildegard Bingen's cosmic egg? Hildegard was a 12th-century abbess and polymath and she has this vision of the universe as an egg (which also looks like a mandorla and so also looks like a vulva). It's super weird and interesting!

I loved this, it made me know some amazing artists and helped me understand their artwork better. Thank you for such a detailed piece. I can feel the absolute love and passion you have for it!

Thank you so much for reading! I swear I blacked out whilst writing this; nothing else mattered, and it was so fun to write about one of my biggest passions that I don’t get to share/discuss as often. I can’t wait to write more, thank you for being here!!

Incredible piece. I am in awe of you! As someone who never studied art and doesn't really understand it, I loved learning about these artworks and the women who created them! ❤

Jada De Luca's avatar

I appreciate you, Katie! I hope these essays make art accessible and understandable, so thanks for the feedback. Can’t wait to write more!

wow what an insightful essay!! i'm really looking into the work of femme-surrealists rn for my project research as a fashion design student, and it is so fascinating how deeply feminist their art is at a core, spiritual level! Perhaps through art we are able to get to a more "precise understanding" (for lack of a better word) of the mysteries of the universe than through pure sciences

Jada De Luca's avatar

At times I think art is the only way we can comprehend such things, at least for me anyway! Thank you for reading! It’s great to see femme surrealism being considered in conjunction with fashion design, I’m super curious and would love to know more!

What a phenomenal read! It took me back to my college days in the best way. I started as an art major but ended up graduating with an English literature degree and this post blended those two practices impeccably! Can’t wait to see what else you post 🤎

Jada De Luca's avatar

It was absolutely my aim to combine the two, I feel so seen by your comment! It feels like my own personal synergy when I am able to link my visual and written interests, especially because I have not written an art analysis since graduating high school in 2018. This essay was a great way to test that muscle out again, thank you for reading Elise!
